Sealed Bearing

Deep groove ball bearings with rubber seals (2RS) or metal shields (ZZ) on both sides, greased for life.

Bearing typeDeep groove ball
01

2RS: rubber contact seals

Suited to dust and water. The seal lip touches the inner ring, which adds friction and lowers the speed limit.

02

ZZ: metal shields

Non-contact steel shields. Lower friction and higher speed than 2RS, but less protection against water and fine dust.

03

Grease life

Sealed bearings cannot normally be relubricated. In warm or fast positions the grease life can end service before fatigue does.

Sealed bearing range and series ENRO lists with 2RS seals

A sealed bearing in the ENRO list is a single row deep groove ball bearing offered with 2RS rubber seals on both sides. 175 of the 200 deep groove sizes are listed that way; the rest are listed open or with shields. The table shows how the sealed sizes spread across the series. The 62 and 63 series carry most of them, which matches where sealed bearings are used: hubs, agricultural machinery, conveyors and small motors.

Sealed bearing sizes by series in the ENRO list
SeriesSizes with 2RS sealsBore range mm

60003110–160

6400317–40
6700710–30
68002610–160
69002810–160

The series digit sets the section for a given bore in the same way as for an open bearing: 60 is light, 62 medium, 63 heavy, 64 extra heavy, and the 160, 67, 68 and 69 series are thin. A sealed bearing of a heavier series has a wider seal and more grease behind it, so for the same bore it usually runs longer in a dirty position before the grease is spent.

2RS or ZZ: which sealed bearing for which site

A sealed bearing is a deep groove ball bearing closed on both sides and greased for life. The two closures behave differently. 2RS rubber contact seals touch the inner ring, so they keep out water and fine dust but add friction and lower the speed limit. ZZ steel shields do not touch the inner ring, so friction and speed are as for an open bearing, but only larger particles are kept out. Use the table to pick, then check the model page for which closures the size is listed with.

Electric motors in clean plant, fans, pumps in dry roomsZZSpeed matters; contamination is light
Power tools, small spindlesZZHigh speed, low load
Dusty but hot positions near the grease limitZZContact seal friction would add heat
Housings with a grease nippleOpenRelubricated in service

Sealed bearings cannot normally be relubricated, so grease life is the service life. Every grease has a maximum continuous temperature given on its data sheet, and as a common rule of thumb grease life roughly halves for every 15 °C above about 70 °C, which is why a sealed bearing in a hot position fails by dry running rather than by fatigue. 175 ENRO deep groove ball bearing sizes are listed with 2RS seals; the size table above filters them by bore. The full list is on the deep groove ball bearing page; the bearing supplier page shows every series with its bore range, and the bearing cross reference matches a number from another catalogue by size. Variants: open, ZZ, 2RS or NR on the same base number

The closure is a version of the base number, not a different bearing. A 6205, a 6205 ZZ and a 6205 2RS share rings, balls and ratings and fit the same housing; only the closure and the grease fill differ. That is why a sealed bearing can be ordered by taking the number from an open bearing and adding the suffix, and why a shielded bearing can replace a sealed one in an emergency as long as the position is clean. The NR version adds a snap ring groove on the outer ring and is combined with an open, shielded or sealed bearing depending on the maker.

Clearance is independent of closure: 6205 2RS C3 is a sealed bearing with C3 clearance. The suffix selector walks through the choice; the model page for each size lists which of the four versions ENRO carries. We reply within 24 hours on business days.

FAQ

Sealed Bearing FAQ

What are sealed bearings?

Sealed bearings have a seal on each side, commonly written 2RS for contact rubber seals. They are greased for life and keep out dust and water better than open or shielded bearings.

What are the disadvantages of sealed bearings?

Contact seals add friction and some heat, so they usually allow a lower speed than open or shielded versions. They cannot normally be relubricated, and the seal lip can be damaged by high temperature or careless mounting.

What is better, sealed or shielded bearings?

Neither in all cases. Rubber seals (2RS) protect better against water and fine dust. Metal shields (ZZ) run with less friction and suit higher speeds in cleaner conditions. Pick by environment and speed.

How long will a sealed bearing last?

Life depends on load, speed, temperature and contamination. Fatigue life can be estimated with the ISO 281 basic rating life (see our life calculator); for sealed bearings the grease life can end service before fatigue does.

Where are ENRO bearings made?

ENRO bearings are Made in China by partner factories, under Japan-managed quality control. Every unit passes 100% outgoing inspection before shipment.

Can you match a part number from another brand?

Send any part number and we'll match the dimensionally equivalent ENRO model. Matching is by boundary dimensions only (dimensionally interchangeable).
