Electric Motor Bearing
Deep groove ball bearings for electric motor end shields. Shielded (ZZ) or sealed (2RS), with the clearance group stated on your RFQ.
Clearance
C3 is common in motors because the shaft and inner ring run warmer than the housing. CN suits motors with light fits and small temperature differences. State the group you need on the RFQ.
Shield or seal
ZZ metal shields have lower friction and suit clean, higher-speed positions. 2RS rubber seals keep out dust and water at a slightly lower speed limit.
Replacement
Match d, D, B, the shield or seal type and the clearance group of the original bearing. Press the bearing on by the ring being fitted, never through the balls.

Ball bearing electric motor sizes by IEC frame
The ball bearing an electric motor uses follows its frame size more than its power rating, because the frame fixes the shaft diameter at the bearing seats. IEC frame numbers are the shaft centre height in millimetres, and makers fit similar deep groove ball bearings to similar frames. The table gives the sizes most often found at the drive end (DE) and non-drive end (NDE) of standard foot-mounted motors; individual makers differ, so confirm from the nameplate or manual before ordering.
| IEC frame | Drive end (typical) | Non-drive end (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| 63 | 6201 | 6201 |
| 71 | 6202 | 6202 |
| 80 | 6204 | 6204 |
| 90 | 6205 | 6205 |
| 100 | 6206 | 6206 |
| 112 | 6206 | 6206 |
| 132 | 6208 | 6208 |
| 160 | 6309 | 6209 |
| 180 | 6310 | 6210 |
| 200 | 6312 | Varies by maker |
| 225 | 6313 | 6213 |
Cross-checked against published motor maker catalogs. Linked sizes are in the ENRO list. Sizes vary by maker and by 2, 4 or 6 pole design; above frame 225 no typical size is given because makers and pole counts differ too much.
Belt-driven motors often carry a larger 63 series bearing at the drive end, for example 6308 in place of 6208, because the belt pull adds radial load. Inverter-driven motors above a few kilowatts need a shaft grounding ring or an insulated bearing at one end; standard steel bearings are not insulated.
How to specify an electric motor bearing
Give the number as it appears on the old bearing: base number, closure suffix and clearance suffix, for example 6205 ZZ C3. If the marking is gone, measure bore, outside diameter and width and use the size finder. Motors nearly always call for C3 clearance because the inner ring is pressed onto a shaft that runs warmer than the housing; keep the group the motor maker chose. The full list is on the deep groove ball bearing page; the bearing supplier page shows every series with its bore range, and the bearing cross reference matches a number from another catalogue by size. We reply within 24 hours on business days.
- Base number: fixes d, D and B under ISO 15.
- Closure: ZZ for clean, fast positions; 2RS for dust and moisture; open where the housing is regreased.
- Clearance: C3 for most industrial motors; CN for small motors with light fits.
- Quantity per size and whether the two ends ship together.
Variants: open, ZZ or 2RS closures and C3 clearance on motor sizes
The same ball bearing electric motor size is listed in up to four versions, and the version is chosen by the motor housing rather than by the motor rating. Open bearings go where the end shield has a grease nipple and a drain, which is normal on larger frames. ZZ shields suit totally enclosed fan-cooled motors that run clean and are greased for life; they add almost no friction and keep the full speed limit. 2RS seals are the choice when the motor works outdoors, in agriculture, in washdown areas or in any position where the bearing sees water and fine dust, at the cost of a lower speed limit that matters only on 2-pole motors near the top of the range.
| Version | Motor position | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Open | Regreasable end shields, usually larger frames | Grease quantity and interval from the motor manual |
| ZZ | TEFC motors in clean plant, fans, pumps in dry rooms | Full speed; standard fill for life |
| 2RS | Outdoor, agricultural, food and washdown motors | Lower speed limit; check on 2-pole motors |
| NR | End shields that locate the bearing with a circlip | Same internal design as open |
| C3 clearance | Nearly all industrial motors | Compensates for the shaft fit and the warm inner ring |
Clearance is written after the closure, so a shielded motor bearing with C3 clearance reads 6205 ZZ C3. The model page for each size lists the versions ENRO carries; if your motor calls for a version the page does not list, say so on the enquiry and the answer comes with the quotation. We reply within 24 hours on business days.

Electric Motor Bearing FAQ
What kind of bearings are used in electric motors?
Most small and medium electric motors run on deep groove ball bearings, usually one at each end of the shaft. Larger motors with belt or heavy radial loads often use a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive end. C3 internal clearance is common in motors because the shaft runs warmer than the housing.
What is the bearing in a motor?
Motor bearings support the rotor shaft in the end shields and keep the air gap constant. In most small and medium motors these are deep groove ball bearings, often shielded (ZZ) or sealed (2RS).
How to replace a bearing in an electric motor?
Follow the motor maker's manual. In general: remove the end shields, pull the old bearing with a puller, check shaft and housing seats, then press the new bearing on by the ring being fitted (inner ring on the shaft), never through the balls. Match d, D, B, the shield or seal type and the clearance group of the old bearing.
What are the 8 types of bearings?
Common classifications list deep groove ball, angular contact ball, self-aligning ball, thrust ball, cylindrical roller, tapered roller, spherical roller and needle roller bearings. The ENRO range currently lists deep groove ball bearings and spherical roller bearings.
Where are ENRO bearings made?
ENRO bearings are Made in China by partner factories, under Japan-managed quality control. Every unit passes 100% outgoing inspection before shipment.
